Women Homeowners: From Zero Rights to Setting Records

Women being denied the right to buy a house may feel far away given where we are now, but the truth is that it wasn’t until 1974 that women could purchase a home. That’s well within many people’s lifetimes! Given how new female homeownership is, it’s even more impressive that women have set records in 2025. As of last year, over 20 million single women own homes in the U.S., which is a record for the country. While overall homeownership decreased roughly one percent since 2024 and is now at 51%, single female homeownership continues to climb.

Another aspect of female homeownership that challenges expectations is the diversity among women buyers. They represent a wide range of relationship statuses, family structures, and financial situations, proving that the stereotype of the perpetually single woman as the typical homebuyer is simply untrue.

According to Century 21’s Eva Angelina Romero, “A lot of women are realizing that buying a home is one of the best ways to start investing in their future.” If 2025’s numbers prove anything, it’s that women are achieving the American Dream on their own – which is quite the accomplishment given where we were just 52 years ago!
