REALTORS® Go Back to School: A Day in the Life of a Principal

In a unique effort to strengthen ties between local schools and community leaders, several members of Orange County REALTORS® recently participated in the “Principal for a Day” program through the Capistrano Unified School District. This annual event invites business professionals and civic leaders to step into the shoes of a school principal for a morning —shadowing administrators, meeting students, and gaining first-hand insight into the daily operations of our local schools.

Participants were paired with principals from a wide range of campuses—elementary, middle, and high schools—throughout the district. After spending time on-site, the group reconvened for a luncheon to share highlights, insights, and a newfound appreciation for the work happening in our schools.

A Lesson in Leadership

My own experience at Chaparral Elementary School was eye-opening. I had the privilege of shadowing Principal Melissa, and I was struck by the incredible range of responsibilities she managed—sometimes all within the same hour. I watched her do everything from directing morning traffic to navigating teacher vacancies and even consoling a little girl who was heartbroken because her grandmother’s visit had ended. She had so many balls in the air and handled all of them with grace and expertise. It was truly impressive to witness what she does on a daily basis to support her students and staff.

Farshad Alijani, another participating REALTOR®, echoed that sentiment after spending the day with Principal Paul. “My biggest takeaway was how much impact a principal can have through small moments—a quick conversation with a teacher, a reassuring word to a student, or a supportive check-in with staff,” he said. “It was an inspiring reminder that great leadership is about presence, patience, and purpose.”

Sunny Wheeler appreciated seeing how well-connected Principal Chris was to his students. “He greeted many by name and asked thoughtful follow-up questions as the kids arrived for school in the morning. From preschoolers to middle schoolers, I saw so much joy and curiosity in the classrooms.”

Diversity, Innovation, and Inclusion

All of the REALTORS® were inspired by the variety of learning environments and the diversity of student experiences being supported throughout the district. Candice Blair, who spent her day at Capistrano Valley High School, was especially impressed by the range of student-led learning opportunities. “From engineering and robotics to choir and auto shop, I was amazed by the opportunities available. Principal Misustin leads with calm confidence, and it’s clear he genuinely cares about creating a space where every student can thrive.”

Veronica Ivy visited Bergeson Elementary, home to Orange County’s first Mandarin immersion program. “The students were not only bilingual, but musically talented and incredibly welcoming,” she shared. “I was moved by their confidence and kindness. I also appreciated the strong focus on safety—every staff member is equipped with emergency alert devices. Principal Linda Kim and her team are doing outstanding work.”

Bridging Communities

Events like “Principal for a Day” remind us that schools are more than places of learning—they are vital community hubs where leadership, empathy, and innovation intersect. For REALTORS®, whose work is so deeply connected to the neighborhoods we serve, this program offers a meaningful way to understand and support the educational heartbeat of our communities.

Thank you to Capistrano Unified School District for this powerful opportunity, and to the many REALTORS® who took part in walking in a principal’s shoes.
