In Memoriam: Jerry Cox (1946-2025)

Jerald James Cox, known to family and friends as Jerry, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2025, in San Clemente, California. He was 78.

Born in Rock Island, Illinois, on December 31, 1946, Jerry spent his early years in Austin, Minnesota, before proudly serving in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Jerry pursued higher education, earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Riverside, in 1972, and completing postgraduate studies at both UCLA and the Wharton School of Business.

Jerry built a long and distinguished career in real estate. He began as a Land Agent for the Southern Pacific Railroad, managing its right-of-way and other properties across the southwestern United States. After the railroad's merger with the Santa Fe, he served as a Bureau Chief for the City of Long Beach, overseeing much of the city’s property. Later, in San Clemente, Jerry continued his professional journey with Conrad Hunt Associates and Re/Max. During this time, Jerry served as president of the local nonprofit Mary Erickson Community Housing organization, where he guided its early acquisitions. Even in semi-retirement, he remained active as a real estate instructor and personal mentor, generously sharing his knowledge and experience with aspiring professionals.

A gifted communicator, Jerry co-authored the Prentice Hall Dictionary of Real Estate, later published as the Plain Language Dictionary of Real Estate, with his wife, Barbara, and colleague David Silver-Westrick—leaving a lasting mark on the field he loved.

Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Barbara; his sisters Kathleen Cox (Michael Gunsolus) of Duluth, MN, and Christine Hickey (Larry) of Hemet, CA; his niece Kallie Gunsolus; his godson Kyle Kurr; and his dear adoptive family, Edgar Pablo and Fabiola Godinez and children.

Jerry will be remembered for his sharp intellect, generous spirit, and steadfast devotion to both his profession and his loved ones. His presence will be deeply missed.

A funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in San Clemente on July 1. Remembrances will begin at 10:00 A.M., followed by the Rosary and Mass. A light lunch will be served afterward at the Cox family home. Interment will take place at Riverside National Cemetery at a later date.
